Château de Saumur
The white château of Saumur rides a spur above the Loire at the western end of château country, and its fame rests on an image: the fairy-tale miniature of it in the Très Riches Heures du duc de Berry, painted around 1410, which fixed the picture of a Loire castle for six centuries.

Saumur ran the full career of a Loire castle: fortress of the counts of Anjou, palace under Duke Louis I, Huguenot stronghold when Saumur was a Protestant capital, then prison and barracks, and today the city’s museum, holding decorative arts and the museum of the horse, in the town of the Cadre Noir riding academy.

The château crowns a short steep walk from the riverfront old town, with current hours and prices at chateau-saumur.fr. Saumur itself repays the trip: tuffeau-stone lanes, sparkling-wine cellars dug into the cliff, and mushroom caves in the old quarries. Direct trains run from Tours in about 40 minutes.

Planning the day
Saumur is a train day. The TER from Tours takes about 40 minutes, bus line A runs from the station to the Château stop, and from there the gate is a minute’s walk. The château keeps shorter hours outside summer, 10:00 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 17:30 from October to March, so plan the castle for the morning and the town, the cliff cellars of the sparkling-wine houses and the mushroom caves, for the afternoon. The family ticket, two adults and two children, is €26.50.
From July 1 to August 31 the château opens seven days a week, 10:00 to 19:00. Fontevraud Abbey, 15 km southeast, is the natural pairing for a second day in the western valley, and Chinon is 30 km south.
